How Does Windshield Repair Kits Work
At one time or another almost every driver has had something hit their windshield while they are driving. Although the hit can be small and only make a little divot in the glass, if not taken care of, it can spread into something much larger. There are several windshield repair kits in the stores that claim they can fix those small cracks and stop them from spreading
The real question is if these kits really work as they claim. While they do seem to help with the damage if done correctly, they can offer a bit of a challenge. The instructions will need to be followed exactly.
It is important to make certain that the crack has not gone through all the layers of the glass. If a fingernail can be run along the crack from the inside and it does not catch on the crack, then the chances are it is not all the way through. If it is not cracked all the way through, then the kit will do the job.
A scrap piece of glass can probably be purchased from a scrap yard. One should be purchased and the repairs tested on it first. The epoxy that is included in kit needs to be applied properly to fill the crack. Practicing first on a scrap piece is a good idea.
The area that is being repair will need to be very clean. There should not be any dust, dirt or waxy buildup left on the glass. It is a good idea to make the final clean up with a brand new clean rag and alcohol.
Although it work should be done a sunny day, it is necessary to keep the vehicle in the shade to avoid the epoxy from hardening too fast. Some cracks will not be deep enough to hold the necessary resin. If this is the case, then a 1/32 inch hold should be drilled into the crack to hold it. It is best to use a dremel tool if possible rather than an electric drill. The dremel works at a slower speed and help to avoid over-drilling.
Once the hole has been filled, the resin should harden and leave a near invisible patch. If the area should develop cracks after using one of these kits, then maybe windshield repair kits are not the answer for this particular issue. See the advice of a professional or check with the insurance company to see if they offer this type of repair. While a kit can save money, it still is not a foolproof as new windshield.
