Emergency Lights For Vehicles And The Colors That Tell Them Apart
Each of the emergency lights for vehicles that are offered today has a distinct color associated with them. These color schemes are used to designate what type of vehicle is being operated in order to inform motorists and pedestrians. The different municipal and commercial entities use these colors for a wide range of departments and other duties.
When it comes down to shades of color used by individual agencies and companies there are a few common ones found. These include blue and red combinations, white, amber, purple, green and yellow. Depending on the state the uses for these shades may be different so only a few uses will be listed.
The Yellow or Amber light is designed for equipment that move slower than normal such as street sweepers. Other construction equipment make use of amber or yellow as well including crews doing road work and even landscapers. One place that the color is commonly seen is on trucks being driven along in order to signal a closed lane.
Blue is the color that has been adopted by most law enforcement agencies and is generally used with red. Blue is also found on tow trucks in some states and volunteer firefighters as well. Fire chiefs have also been known to use blue as well as European law enforcement agencies making it very well known all over the world.
Green is often used in the fire fighting field and is generally attached to the top of the car belonging to a commander or chief. In some areas green is used by tow trucks and volunteer fire fighters as an attention grabbing color. It can also be found attached to mobile command centers used by various law enforcement and military agencies.
Red is the other universal shade known all over the world and is most commonly acquainted with fire trucks, ambulances and EMT operations. White is another color used by a school bus and in some cases a tow truck to designate when they are coming to a stop or are stopped and performing their duties. Purple is probably the least known shade used in these situations and is primarily used during times of a funeral precession.
Since there are so many emergency lights for vehicles today it is nice to know what the colors mean. Having knowledge of color schemes allows for easier recognition when determining vehicle type along with agency affiliation. The colors will vary depending on what part of the world they are used in and still vary quite a bit in the US alone from state to state.
